Flooded Gum

A fast growing eucalypt, flooded gum is one of the leading species used in the Forests NSW hardwood plantation program. A straight trunk tree with smooth bark, white, gray-white or blue-gray in colour.

Appearance: The rough bark stocking at the base of the tree contrasts with the clean white trunk, giving the impression of the debris lines from a recent flood hence the name. Heartwood Pink to pale red-brown. Sapwood Paler in colour.

Grain: Texture Moderately coarse but even. Grain Usually straight. *The timber often features a 'scribbling' pattern.

Density: 750kg per cubic metre

 

Brush Box

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm   Slimwood – 80x13mm

A medium sized tree attaining a height of 35 to 40 metres with a stem diameter of 1 to 2 metres.

The trunk is usually straight and of good form, it’s covered in light grey to brown bark. It found in rainforests from Newcastle, New South Wales to Maryborough in Queensland.

Appearance: The heartwood ranges from pink-brown to red-brown but is often very variable between trees. The sapwood is usually slightly paler in colour

Grain: Close and ever textured.  Often with curly interlocking grain

Density: 880kg per cubic metre

 

Iron Bark (Red)

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm   Slimwood – 80x13mm

The stem is usually straight and free of branches, it’s height peaks to around 50 metres and has a diameter of 1.5 metres. The bark is hard, course and ranges from dark brown to black in colour. Found in New South to Bundaberg, Queensland, also found in scattered patches as far north as the Atherton Tablelands.

Appearance: The heartwood ranges from reddish-brown to dark brown. The sapwood is much lighter in colour

Grain: Tight and usually straight grained

Density:  1105kg per cubic metre

 

Jarrah

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm   Slimwood – 85x12mm

A medium tree attaining a height of 30 to 40 meters in height and a stem of up to 2 meters.  Its bark is rough and persistent, somewhat stringy in appearance, with a fibrous texture. Jarrah is confined to the south west of Western Australia.

Appearance: The heartwood is usually dark red while the sapwood is usually light and pale.

Grain: Moderately coarse textured and even.

Density. 835kg per cubic metre.

Alpine Ash

T&G - 80x19mm, 108x19mm   Slimwood – 85x12mm

Alpine Ash is a tall tree from the high altitudes of the Australian Alps and the beautiful Snowy River country. It is ideal for interiors ranging from sophisticated retail spaces to elegant home interiors.

Appearance: Heartwood pale pink or pale yellowish brown. Sapwood not clearly distinguishable.

Grain: It is predominantly straight grained as a result of the quarter sawn cut, providing Alpine Ash with excellent dimensional stability

Density: 650kg per cubic metre

Black Butt

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 108x19mm, 130x19mm   Slimwood – 80x13mm

A Moderate to large attaining 40 to 60 metre in height and 1 to 2 metres in stem diameter. It has a straight slender trunk covered in dark grey-brown bark. Found in coastal regions from southern New South Wales to Maryborough, Queensland.

Appearance: The heartwood is pale brown with a faint tinge of pink. The sapwood is slightly paler in colour.

Grain: Moderately course textured and variable. Gum veins are common. The presents of wavy interlock grain can produce attractive figure in some pieces.

Density:  930kg per cubic metre

 

Cypress Pine

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm  Slimwood – N/A

The largest areas of forest containing Cypress are found through western New South Wales and into Southern Queensland. It is extremely hardy, surviving poor soil conditions and low rainfall.

Appearance: The tree only grows to a medium size, The heartwood can range in colour from dark chocolate through to pale fawns. The sapwood is a pale yellow.

Grain: It has a very fine, even texture with a straight grain.

Density: 850kg per cubic metre

 

Forest Red

A medium to tall forest tree attaining 20 to 50 metres in height with a stem diameter of up to 2 meters.

The trunk is usually starit and clear for more the half its height with smooth white, grey  and bluish patches were bark has been shed. Rough dark dead bark is found the base of the stem. This species is the most extensive distribution from coastal south eastern Victoria to northern Queensland.

Appearance: Heartwood is red too dark red. The sap is usually distinctively paler  in colour.

Grain: Moderately course, uniform texture, usually interlocked.

Density: 1010kg per cubic metre

 

Laying Tongue and Groove

Karri

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm   Slimwood – 85x12mm

Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor), is native to south-west Western Australia. It is one of Australia's tallest hardwood trees. Larger formats and clearer grades are more likely to be old growth

Appearance: Heartwood is pale pink to reddish brown. Sapwood is easily distinguished as a whitish colour.

Grain: Wood displays a coarse even texture with an interlocking grain.

Density: 900 kg per cubic metre

 

 

 

Messmate

T&G - 80x19mm, 108x19mm, 130x19mm  Slimwood – 85x12mm

A large hardwood tree up to 50 meters in height and 2 meters  in at stem. Noted in the Gympie region for excellent stem form and vigour. Bark is usually brown or yellow- brown, flaky-fibrous, often distinctly tessellated on the trunk. Appears in scattered areas form south of Gympie to the North of Cooktown.

Appearance: Heartwood yellowish-brown and the sapwood is distinctly paler in colour.

Grain: Unfigured, medium textured, generally uniform in grain. can be slightly interlocking.

Density: 1010kg per cubic metre

Mixed Hardwood

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm   Slimwood – 80x13mm

Australian Native Mixed Seasoned hardwoods are an excellent choice for their high density, variant colours, toughness and durability and are seasoned to ensure optimum hardness, stability and long service life.

Appearance: The heartwood ranges from light brown through to dark brown. Sapwood is usually white in colour and up to 50mm wide.

Grain: Moderately coarse textured and variable. Gum veins common. The presence of wavy grain can produce an attractive fiddle back figure.

Density:  900kg per cubic metre

New England Black Butt

New England Black butt is sourced from the coastal ranges and tablelands of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland

Appearance: The material is very similar in appearance and properties to Black butt (E. pilularis). The colour ranges from pale browns to straw blondes, with gum veins being a common feature.

Grain: The grain is usually quite straight.

Density: 1150kg per cubic metre

New England Oak

This species is sourced from the New England region of New South Wales. In Classic grade, New England Oak has a sleek and uniform look that is well suited to modern, minimalist and traditional styles

Appearance: New England Oak offers tonal variations from soft yellows and pinks to pinkish browns.

Grain: he texture is medium and even, with a variable grain and prominent growth rings.

Density: 750kg per cubic metre

 

Red Mahogany

T&G - 80x19mm   Slimwood – 80x13mm

A medium sized tree attaining 40 to 45 meters in height and up to 1.5 meters at stem. Its bark is rough and greyish to reddish-brown in colour. Occours from just north of Townsville to Iron Range on Cape York and scattered areas from Gladstone to southern coast of New South Whales.

Appearance: The heartwood is red to dark red. Sapwood is distinctively paler in colour.

Grain: Generally medium textured with even grain. At times the grain can be interlocking producing an attractive figure.

Density: 995kg per cubic metre.

 

Ribbon Gum

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm   Slimwood – 80x13mm

A fast growing eucalypt that is native to New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Ribbon Gum usually grows to around 20 metres tall, reaching up to 30 metres at times.

Appearance: A beautiful colouration from soft yellow through to pale pink tans.

Grain: Variable grains, Pronounce growth rings are seen through the timber.

Density: 750kg per cubic metre

 

 

 

Spotted Gum

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm   Slimwood – 80x13mm

On favourable sites, this species grows up to 45 meters in height and 1.3 meters is stem diameter, but only half these dimensions attained at poorer sites. They have straight slender trunks with smooth bark. This is shed in patches leaving slight depressions in the surface which give a spotted appearance. Mainly found in coastal areas of New South Wales and Queensland, but extending to western areas of Queensland.

Appearance: The heartwood ranges from a light-brown to dark-brown. Sapwood is usually white in colour

Grain: Moderately coarse in textured and variable. Gum veins are common. The presence of wavy grain can produce an attractive fiddle back figure

Density: 1010kg per cubic metre

 

Sydney Blue Gum

Sydney blue gum is a large eucalypt that occurs naturally in tall open coastal forests, northward from around Bateman’s Bay in NSW to southern Queensland.

Appearance: Its distinctive colour range goes from dark, rich pink through to deep red-brown.

Grain: This wood has a slightly interlocked or straight grain.

Density: 850 kg per cubic metre

 

Stringy Bark

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm Slimwood 85x13

A medium sized forest tree attaining a height of 25 to 35 meters in height and up to a meter in stem diameter. The bark is typically thick "stringy" and persistent to small branches. It is longitudinally fissured and grey to brown in colour. A common eucalypt of the coast and some adjacent tablelands of New South Wales, extending to Yarraman in Queensland, with isolated strands in the Carnarvon Range area and the Blackdown Tablelands.

Appearance: Heartwood is predominately light brown and occasionally pale pink. The sapwood is paler in colour but not sharply differentiated

Grain: Generally medium textured and uniform, but sometimes interlocking

Density: 1010kg per cubic metre 

 

Tallowwood

T&G - 60x19mm, 80x19mm, 130x19mm Slimwood – 80x13mm

Tallowwood is a large hardwood found along the coast and coastal ranges between the Hunter River in New South Wales up to the Maryborough district of Queensland. Rough bark persists to the small branches and is brown to red-brown, soft and fibrous.

Appearance: The heartwood is a greyish-yellow colour with tinges of olive green and is a hard, fairly close-grained timber. The sapwood is distinctly paler

Grain: The timber is free of gum vein, something quite rare in eucalypts

Density: 1000 kg per cubic metre

 

Tasmanian Oak

T&G -  80x19mm, 108x19mm  Slimwood – 85x13mm

The name Tasmanian Oak was originally used by early European timber workers who believed the eucalypts showed the same strength as English Oak. In Tasmania, eucalypts may live for 400 years or more and regularly attain a height of 70m; some individuals have been recorded as reaching 100m. .

Appearance: Tasmanian Oak is light in colour, varying from straw to reddish brown with intermediate shades of cream to pink. It is recognised for its excellent staining qualities, which allow ready matching with other timbers, finishes or furnishings.

Grain: Tasmanian Oak logs are cut on the quarter sawn to produce an extremely straight and even grain with excellent dimensional stability.

Density: 780kg per cubic metre
